Safety is very important all the time – but on the Halloween it is even more so – please read the following tips and refresh your memory – everyone wants to have a safe and happy experience!

Ten Halloween Safety Tips

  1. Children should always be accompanied by an adult

  2. Children should wear clothing that is easily visible in the dark – reflective materials are the best.

  3. Trick or treat in areas that are well known to children and do not wonder into unknown neighbourhoods

  4. All candies need to be carefully inspected by adults to make sure they have not been tampered with. If you find a suspicious candy, you need to contact the police.

  5. Children need to be told to stay away from stray animals

  6. Children should wear masks that do not interfere with their vision. It is much better to create a face mask using make up.

  7. Children need to watch for any vehicles on the road very carefully and not run across the streets.

  8. Costumes need to be short enough to make sure the child doesn’t trip.

  9. All trick or treaters should carry a flashlight and be dressed appropriately for the weather

  10. If you have a smallest doubt about letting children go house to house, organize a party for children in the neighbourhood!

Have a safe and Happy Halloween and send your comment, suggestions and experiences in – your input is always welcomed!

You don’t have to spend lots of money to create some nice Halloween decorations – little bit of creativity and a few hours will get the job done!

Here are some ideas and instructions for you:

Fabulous Pumpkin Vase

pumpkin-centrepiece

Make natural vases from gourds and small pumpkins for the holiday table, and fill them with autumn-hued flowers and leaves. These are pretty set on the burlap table runner and you can use a scrap of the burlap to make a fringe collar.

You need:

  • 2 small pumpkins or gourds
  • Sharp paring knife or razor knife
  • Spoon
  • Aluminum foil
  • Florist foam
  • Scissors
  • Fresh and dried flowers, grasses, and seedpods
  • 3-inch green, wired picks (available at florist shops or craft stores)
  • 2 burlap strips (approximately 15 by 2 inches; optional)• Straight pins

To make:

  • Cut out the tops of the pumpkins with a sharp knife, and scoop out the pulp with a spoon.
  • Line the pumpkins with foil. (Most pumpkins and gourds will remain watertight for several days, but lining them with foil gives added protection against leakage.)
  • Cut the florist foam to flt inside each pumpkin, and add just enough water to saturate the foam.
  • Arrange the flowers, grasses, and seedpods. Any tender flower stems can be secured and strengthened, using a wired pick.

Candy Corn Treat Jar

candycornjar3

Baby food jar (or any size jar you want)
Enough candy corn to fill jar
Black and White paints- to be able to wash the jar after it is painted, use air-dry enamel paints
Clear satin glaze for air-dry enamel paints or clear gloss glaze
5-inch square of Halloween print fabric
Ribbon or raffia

  • Thoroughly wash the jar and lid in hot soapy water. When completely dry, fill with candy corn, packing tightly.
  • Put on lid and shake jar. If candies shift or settle, open jar, add more candy corn and replace lid. Repeat as needed until candies can’t move.
  • Paint glass with a basecoat of clear satin glaze. Let dry.
  • Look for candy pieces that can be seen in full view from the outside of the jar. On jar, paint faces so they appear to be on these candy pieces.
  • To paint the faces, use the tip of a paintbrush handle to dab on two white dots for each set of eyes. When dry, use a toothpick to dab a tiny black dot in each eye, changing position on each face as shown in the picture.
  • Use a No. 0 (fine) brush and black paint to paint each mouth as shown or as desired. When dry, add another coat if needed. Let dry.
  • Add topcoat of glaze. Let dry.
  • Center the fabric square on top of the lid. Tie ribbon or raffia around the rim of the jar to hold fabric in place and make a bow. To make it easier to keep the fabric in place while tying the bow, first put a rubber band around lid.

Ghost Wind Twirler:

ghost-milkc11

  • Trace ghost pattern on to side of milk carton and cut out.
  • Draw face with permanent marker on both sides of the plastic.
  • Using a hole-punch, make holes in top and bottom of ghost.
  • Thread strong string or fishing line through top hole for a hanger.
  • Thread string or fishing line through bottom hole and fasten a bell on the end for weight and a little music as the wind blows.

Spider Hat:

spiderhatbear1

This party hat is so fun—you really can’t get the idea of the bouncing legs until you put him on!!!

Materials needed:
Black and orange construction paper
Ruler, scissors and glue or tape

Cut eight strips of black paper 1-1/2″ by 9″ (these will be the legs).

Cut two strips 2″ by 11″ (these you will need to glue together to make the 2″ by 22″ hat band).

Cut two 2″ black circles, two 1-1/2″ orange circles, two 1″ black circles (these are the eyes).

Fit the 2″ wide strips, that were glued together, around the person’s head– overlap and glue ends together. Glue the eyes to the hat band with the eyes touching as shown. Fold the leg strips in half, then fold one end of each leg strip back 1″ for the foot. Glue the straight end to the inside edge of the hat band. Fold and glue remaining legs. You will have four legs on each side of your hat as shown.Put it on and have fun bouncing up and down!!!!

Hope you will have fun making these – please send in your comments and suggestions – your input is always appreciated!

Halloween Pet Safety

pirate-300x300Halloween can be full of temptations and danger for pets – and not in the candy and the opened front door. Your pet need to be looked after with extra care during Halloween and here are some tips that will help you avoid a potentially hearth-breaking situation.

  • One thing you want to make sure about is that your dog or cat are wearing ID tags and that the besgt and safest place for them is indoors.
  • Don’t leave your dog or cat out in the yard – there are plenty of stories of vicious pranksters who have harmed pets on Halloween – especially black cats.
  • Candies are definitely not good for your pets – both cats and dogs. Chocolate is poisonous and tin foil and cellophane wrappers can be hazardous if swallowed.
  • If you are putting a costume on your dog, make sure that it isn’t constricting or unsafe. Be careful not to obstruct the pet’s vision. Even the friendliest and sweetest dog can get snappy when he doesn’t see what is going on around him.
  • It is not a good idea to let the family dog accompany your children on their trick-or-treat mission without the company of an adult. Children may a have difficult time handling the pet with so many others around.
  • Keep decoration that your pet could chew on – like streamers, spider webs, wires and cords – out of reach.
  • Place live flame decoration like candles and jack- o’-lanterns out of your pet’s reach. Curious critters risk being burned by the flame – and they could easily knock over a candle or pumpkin and cause a fire.
  • It is a good idea to keep your pet in a quiet place, away form trick-or-treaters and other Halloween activities. Dogs and cats are creatures of habit and could easily become frightened or agitated by the strange sights and sounds of costumed visitors.
  • And once more – make sure your pets is wearing ID tags – all it takes is an opened door and attention to elsewhere to find yourself searching for your pet.
  • And if you cat or dog will be outside, make sure that they are visible to others – reflective or flashing collar or a tag will fo the trick.

Have a happy and safe Halloween and remember that your comments are always welcomed here!

header_halloween_funI really think the idea is to create Halloween costume that will not cost a fortune ,make heads turn and people smile. It is not all the difficult and here are 10 ideas for you that will for help you accomplish it!

Kitty Kat

Kitty Kat

1 – Kitty Kat

This very simple, but pretty impressive looking costume is really easy to make. Start with a black sweat suit. Make a cat ear headband:

Using construction paper, cut a strip about 2 inches wide and long enough to wrap around your head. You will want to make it couple inches longer so that you will have room to staple the ends together. Fold another piece of paper in a half and cut out pointy ears. At this point, you can add striped, spots or any other design you want by drawing them on with magic marker.

Put the bottom edge of each ear against the strip of paper you had already cut and staple or tape them into place. And then just staple or tape ends of the headband together so that it fits snugly around your head.

Next – use piece of felt or more construction paper to cut out a long thin tail. Using safety pins, attach it to the back side of your sweat pants.

Using black eyeliner or face paints, make yourself whiskers and black nose.

You could stop there or add feather boa – easy to pick up at a dollar store or a craft store.  Cut it into sections to fit around neck, arms and also use it for the tail. The boa pieces can be attached with safety pins.

Kandy Kane

Kandy Kane

2 – Kandy Kane

Incredibly easy costume to make! All you need is a long sleeve white T-shirt, pair of long while pants (long underwear will do nicely) and red and green duct tape. Just stick the tape to the clothes in alternating colours – the way striped are on candy canes. When you are doing it, make sure you put the tape on loosely – it will have a much better effect.

Large Styrofoam candy cane can be picked up at a dollar store or easily made by cutting cardboard, wrapping white paper around it (you can use paper towels or white kitchen garbage bags to so that) and wrapping tape around.

Charlie Brown

Charlie Brown

3 – Charlie Brown

There isn’t a costume that is much easier to put together than this one. Black short, socks and shoes that you already have to start with. Then all you need is yellow T-shirt – second hand stores have tons of them! And then cut the zig-zag pattern from old black T-shirt of any black material. Attach the zig-zag pattern to the yellow T-shirt by either sewing it on or using fabric glue and you are done !

Witch

Witch

4 – Witch

To start – check out boxes of stuff you may have in your storage – or visit second hand store. You will not have any problems finding pieces of clothing to make this costume out of. You will want to find a hat with the wig attached – easiest way to do this. Then you will need a black turtleneck shirt or sweater and a leotard. You should be able to find the stripped leotard in a store like Wal-mart or you could also use black leotard and stripped socks.

Cut an old dress or a skirt into ragged strips and pin each strip onto a black elastic belt.

You can embellish the costume by attaching a large silk flower and a broom to make it complete.

Old Lady

Old Lady

5 – Old Lady

Another – how much easier could this be? Costume!

Find and old dress – the more flowers or brighter colours the better. Then you will need couple of baby blankets and couple of Depends undergarments. First – fold up the baby blankets and the Depends. Put on an old pair of knit shorts and place them in the back to add to your backside.

Then put on the old dress,. Tie it with an old belt and place the folded baby blankets in the fron to make it looks like your bosoms have fallen. Put your hair up and add powder to make them gray. Use the baby powder all over your face to make it pale and add lines and wrinkles with eyeliner pencil.

To “dress” this up even more, add long necklace, purse with candy in it and whatever else you may think of. And make sure you talk with a cracked voice and call every young guy “Sonny”!

Mad Scientist

Mad Scientist

6 – Mad Scientist

Using clothes you already have is one of the best ideas – to top it of, you won’t spend a tons of money!

Start with  white dress shirt and black slacks. Slick back hair with hair gel or hair spray.

You will need to find a pair of glasses (you can remove the lenses easily) and play doctor set. Nice touch is a small notepad and crayons in the pocket and Bad-Aids in the pant pocket.

Mother Nature

Mother Nature

7 – Mother Nature

Start with a brown track suit – or brown sweater and brown pants if that is what you have on hand.

The – using glue gun, start attaching items that will represent each season – like snow ornaments, snowflakes, fall leaves, ivy, flowers, birds, butterflies – whatever you can think of. You can find a piece of blue netting or blue sheer material to represent water. You can glue on sea shells and pieces of corral to the belt.

And here is a fun item that really makes this costume great – pair of animal shoes! Just a pair of old slipper and stuffed animals of your choice will do that!

Pets for Sale

Pets for Sale

8 – Pets for Sale

Find a large cardboard box and wrap it in paper (your choice). Attach wide ribbon to make suspenders that will make the box hang over shoulders.

Get some poster board or construction paper and make a sign that says: Animals for Sale and a dollar amount. You can add paw prints to make the box more decorative. Glue the sign on front of the box.

Glue or staple small stuffed animals everywhere you can think of – including pinning some to the clothing!

Popcorn Box

Popcorn Box

9 – Popcorn Box

Find a large cardboard box and cut off the top where your head will be. On the bottom, cut holes for your legs – but make sure you don’t cut the holes too big – you will be putting balloons inside the box.

Then cut holes in the sides for your arms. When you are done cutting, paint the box with white and red stripes (poster paint should do the trick)

Then make sign that says “Popcorn” and attach it to the front of your box.

You will need white and yellow balloons – blown up on various sizes to represent the popcorn kernels.

Put on white t-Shirt, white sweat pants, step into the popcorn box and have someone fill it with balloons, you can add white hat with pieces of real popcorn glued to it  - and you are ready to go!

Super Baby

Super Baby

10 – Super Baby

This outfit will put smiles on everyone’s face! All you need is a piece of red fabric for the cape and a blue T-Shirt,to which you attach the red “S” symbol cut out of felt and attached to a piece of yellow felt. Matching blue pants or suitable red pants will make the easiest ever baby costume!

I hope you will have fun making these costumes and that you will have a happy and safe Halloween! Please send in your comments, suggestions and experiences – your input is always welcomed!

Top 10 Foods to Beat Colds and Flu

October 23, 2009 in Recipes by Hanna Trafford

fluThere is so much information about the flu – how to prevent getting it, how to know that you have it, what to do about it, to get a flu shot or not… and on and on and on!

I found some information to add to all that – and it makes a whole lot of sense to me. I do however have to admit, that the foods listed totally appeal to me – so maybe I am being a bit partial. But let’s face it – what have you got to loose by trying this?

chocolate-flavonoids-health-weight-loss-nutrition-diet1. Chocolate:

You don’t have to feel so guilty if you treat yourself to chocolate! The health benefits of cocoa creations have been widely reported. Researchers have found that theobromine – an active ingredient in dark chocolate suppressed nerve sensitivity in the throat – and that reduced the urge to cough. Apparently – 2 ounces of dark chocolate have the same punch as a dose of strong cough medication. You need to pick dark chocolate that is at least 70% cocoa.

bananas1

2. Bananas:

Bananas help soothe upset stomach – nasty side-effect of influenza. This fruit stimulates the production of mucus in the stomach, protecting it from acid that makes you queasy. Plus – they are rich in potassium and vitamin C so they help to balance electrolytes during bouts of diarrhea or vomiting.

bowl_of_chicken_soup

3. Chicken Noodle Soup:

Some people call it “Nature’s Penicillin” and it is in fact a greast way to get rid of sniffles. That is because it’s steam unlocks sinus congestion, high protein in the soup boosts energy and the anti-oxidant-rich vegetables act as anti-inflammatory. The sodium that is added for flavour replenishes lost electrolytes. Although being sick will decrease appetite, it is very important to eat to help your body beat cold germs.

oranges_and_juice

4. Orange Juice:

Just one cup of this refreshing liquid will give you about a half of recommended daily intake of vitamin C. And that is a good thing, considering the immune boosting effects of this vitamin. It is not a cure for cold, but vitamin C will help you fight off germs and shorten cold symptoms. Of possible, choose freshly squeezed juice and leave the pulp in!

garlic

5. Garlic:

Crushed garlic contains allicin, natural decongestant and antibiotic that stimulates immune function. Garlic looses much of these cold-busting properties at high heat – so it is recommended to use raw garlic in soups and salads or adding it at the end of the cooking process.

salmon

6. Seafood:

Fish and seafood – like salmon, shrimp and lobster are rich in zinc and selenium – those are anti-oxidants the will help to boost the body’s immune system. Ther Omega-3 fatty acids will help to flush the flu virus out of your body and reduce inflammation. Nutrients found in seafood will also optimize and increase body;s ability to fight off infection – and that will make it easier to beat the colds faster.

chili-peppers_maadi-souk_blog

7. Chili Peppers:

Cayenne and other chili peppers can potentially knock the cold right out of you. There is a high concentration of capsaicin (the stuff that makes peppers hot) an that opens and drains congested nasal passages. It also clears airways!

getcosywithtea_082_n_lg

8. Tea:

Green, black, white – they are all cold busters! Teas are full of polyphenols (anti-oxidants that act as anti-inflammatories) and that will keep membranes moist, helping you to breathe easier. Steep your tea for at least 90 seconds and drink it hot. That will maximize the health benefit. Hot tea will impede spread of viruses (cold viruses thrive at below body temperature) adn steam from hot tea will also work as decongestant.

dried-elderberries

9. Elderberries:

These berries are a great source of anti-oxidants and it si believed that they will help ease winter colds, flus and sinus infections. The dried berries that you can find in health food stores (some under the name of Sambucol) are known to reduce viral infections and stimulate the immune system. A bit of caution here: the roots, leaves, stem and bark are toxic and should not be eaten!

yogurt-in-a-tub-with-spoonashx

10. Yogurt:

ABout 70% of the body;s immune system occurs in the digestive tract. By promoting the growth of healthy bacteria in the intestines, yogurt boosts the immune system and fights against harmful bacteria. But don’t eat yogurt if you are vomitting – since your digestive tract is impaired in that situation, it will not digest foods such as dairy products.

I hope you enjoyed reading this information – I welcome your comments, suggestions and experiences!

Scrapbooking Your Memories

scrapbookIf you’re anything like me, you want to take pictures of all your memories, and then display them in a nice way for everyone to see.

I like the idea of scrap booking as you can add your own personal flair to the pictures with embellishments, mementos and your own words.

I am currently starting to get myself geared up to start scrap booking my sons life up until now. Although it’s only 6 months so far, which doesn’t seem like much, we have collected A LOT of pictures of the little man in that time.

Here are some tips that I’ve learned from scrap booking in the past that may help you get your mind around how to do this for yourself.

1. Identify a theme of the scrapbook you want to create. Example: My son’s first year
2. Gather all the pictures you have on that topic
3. Organize the photos how you would like. Example: chronological order (first month, second month, etc), groups (pictures with mom, pictures with dad, etc.)
4. Go through each group you’ve created and select only the pictures you would like to use, being a little ruthless as you don’t want to have millions of photos in your scrapbook. They’ll end up looking repetitive if you do.
5. Gather any mementos you may want to use. Example: excerpts from my journal of certain moments
6. Gather embellishments to make your pages come to life and add a certain “professional” look.
7. Figure out a layout you would like to use. You don’t have to use the same layout for each page, but they should flow nicely from page to page.
8. Lastly, put them all together!

Keep in mind that you don’t have to spend a lot of money on this to make it look great. I have found a lot of great scrap booking supplies at the dollar store.

This can seem like a daunting task when you first start out, but the result is a great collection of your memories that everyone in your family can look back on forever!

How to Get Rid of Ladybugs

Asian Lady Beetle

Asian Lady Beetle

Native Ladybug

Native Ladybug

They are congregating in a big way – some people report hundreds of these little insects gathering on the outside of their houses, getting inside every chance they have.

But – are they the “real” ladybugs? Probably not – that is- if you can tell the difference. And not that it matters much anyway – nobody wants armies of these inside the house.

If you have been invaded by them, chances are that you are dealing with the Asian Lady Beetle and not the native lady bug. The difference is subtle – the Asian Lady Beetle is orange to black in colour and has a whole bunch of dots, as many as 19 of them.

If you are wondering where they came from, you can sort of blame the government for that. These insects were imported here at the beginning of the 20th century to help with controlling tree-killing aphids. They feed on them – so they are the good guys! But granted – they are not so good when they show up in large groups inside of your house!

What to do?

First – check out your screen doors, window screen and screened in porches. They need to be properly sealed, since the most common way for these insects to get into your house are cracks in screen doors or doors that don’t fit properly. You can fix that easily and inexpensively by using weather stripping or by replacing torn screens.

Next – check out door frames, window frames and your siding. Some of the insects are stubborn enough to try to get into the house through your siding! You may want to check seals around air vents and piping are good.

So – essentially what you are trying to do is to prevent the migration of Asian lady Beetles into your house. You can also do that by spraying pesticide to the outside walls of your house, your siding, eaves, attic vents, roof overhangs, doors and windows. I would say you pretty much need to do that if the problem gets really bad and you have swarms nesting on the outside of your home.

I heard of a neat little trick to get rid of them. Haven’t tried it myself, but it sounds easy and makes a great sense:

What you do is take the hose to your vacuum cleaner and stick nylon down it, then seal the nylon to the hose with a rubber band. What you have created here is a filter on the end of your hose. Then you just go around and vacuum the pests. They get trapped in the nylon, which you remove when you are done, tie it and throw it in the garbage. It does seem like the easiest and the least ecological destructive way!

Here is a diagram for it for you – just to make it clear:

How to Use Vacuum Cleaner Hose to get Rid of Ladybugs

How to Use Vacuum Cleaner Hose to get Rid of Ladybugs

And no – don’t do it if you have sentimental feelings towards Ladybugs – I am just giving you the information here! And as usual – I would love to get your comments and suggestions – your input is very much appreciated!

Sleeping Through the Night

jax-sleeping1Some parents luck out with a baby who learns to sleep all on their own right through the night early on. Other parents aren’t so lucky, and have to teach their child this skill.
If you don’t you’re really doing your child a disservice as well as yourself. You need your sleep to be able to properly take care of your bundle, and they need their sleep to tackle all the learning and growing they have on their plate!

I have been one of the luckier ones; fortunately, Jaxson has been sleeping through the night since he was about 8 weeks old. I do have a few mommy friends though, who are currently struggling with this issue.

My friend’s 4-month-old wakes up almost every hour throughout the night. He’s not necessarily hungry, but has gotten used to having the constant comfort of having her by his side.

But he has come to the age where it’s time to settle in his crib, and she is using the “Ferber” method to help. This involves picking a bed time and sticking with it.
When the child starts crying…and they will!… you have to let them cry it out on their own. The method tells you to let them cry for 5 minutes. Then you can go into their room and console them – without picking them up. Only stay a short time, even if your baby is still crying.
Leave the room for 10 minutes this time before you go back into console. Then wait 15 minutes, and set that as the maximum for the rest of the night.

The next night you extend those wait periods to begin at 15 minutes and carry on to 20 and 25 minutes.

It is normal for babies to take a while to get used to falling asleep on their own because up until this point they are used to the constant comfort of mommy. But in the end this is the best for your little one because learning to fall asleep independently will teach them to self soothe.

Don’t worry, they’ll never not need you… it is good for them to be able to depend on themselves as well!

Good luck!!
