Top Halloween Safety Tips

  1. Children should always be accompanied by an adult.
  2. Children should wear clothing that is easily visible in the dark – reflective materials are the best.
  3. Trick or treat in areas that are well known to children and do not wander into unknown neighbourhoods.
  4. All candies need to be carefully inspected by adults to make sure they have not been tampered with. If you find a suspicious candy, you need to contact the police.
  5. Coach your children to stay away from stray or unknown animals.
  6. Make sure your kids, if they’re wearing masks, wear masks that do not interfere with their vision. It is much better to create a face mask using makeup.
  7. Children need to watch for any vehicles on the road very carefully and not run across the streets.
  8. Costumes need to be short enough to make sure the child doesn’t trip.
  9. Give your Trick or Treaters a flashlight, to make it fun, pick up some different coloured gels and let them pick their favourite light colors over their flashlights.
  10. If you have any doubts about letting children go house to house, organize a party for children in the neighbourhood with their friends and other parents. This will make it fun and safe at the same time.
  11. If your kids are going to be going out alone, then take the time to plan out a route so everyone knows the plans and can stick to it.
  12. This one is for the dual mobile phone (and brave) household. Give your child your mobile phone (or your spouses cell phone) – turn on “Location Services” and that will allow you to track their current location with decent accuracy.
  13. Remind your kids not to eat their treats and goodies until they are examined by an adult at home, candy should not be eaten if the package is already opened. If they receive any homemade items, then make sure your kids know who gave this to them and if they are unsure, out it goes.
  14. Only go up to houses that are very well lit, if unsure, accompany your child.
  15. Only cross the street on corners if you absolutely have to get to the other side.
  16. Do not walk as a group in the middle of the street – if there are no sidewalks make sure you are as far off as possible and paying attention to cars.
  17. If possible wear face-makeup instead of masks.
  18. For maximum visibility, attach reflective stickers to your childs costumes.
  19. Opt for a costume with a light coloured fabric.
  20. Make sure any props they are carrying with their costume are soft and flexible.

I’ve collected more great tips from other moms to make sure your child stays safe this Halloween:

Don’t enter strangers homes and always stay with a trusted adult.

Keep your cool if you run into another frustrating parent.

“Elaborate on basic safety rules leading up to Halloween”.

For collecting candy use a small pillowcase and have your child decorate it.

“Swords, knives and other costume accessories should be short soft and flexible”.

Don’t let your child travel alone – always ensure they are in a group.

Have your kids wear light clothes.

Have your child wear comfortable shoes.

Clear your own walkway to make sure there is a path.

If the costume can only use a mask, make sure it is pushed up while walking from house to house.

If your child has a cellphone, get them to always check in with you .
