He may be just a fish - but what a fish he is!

He may be just a fish - but what a fish he is!

Meet Moe – one would think that Moe is just a fish. But as with all my other animal friends, there is also a story about Moe. It is now almost 5 years ago that I went for a routine visit to a local aquarium shop to pick up needed supplies. While there, I walked around to check out what was new in the water world. I came up to a tank in which a solitary red, funny shaped fish regally floated around. I stopped, leaned closer to the glass and he immediately backed-up, swimming backwards. I thought I just strike a conversation with this funny creature so I said :”Hi there you cute little thing” – and this cute thing dove to the bottom,  picked up a stone in his mouth and spat it straight at the glass I was leaning towards. It really surprised me and I knew if there ever was a love at first sight with a fish, this was it! And as it happens, this happened on Valentines day and this creature was actually a heart shaped parrot fish. I went home and told David that I found him the perfect Valentines Day gift for me and we had to go get it right away before someone else does. So we did – that was a long time ago and as much as I didn’t expect to have this fish for more than like two years – he hangs on real well and is the boss of the tank we now have.

Oh – and the name? I love “Finding Nemo” – no surprise there I guess. And I thought that my fish looks kind of like Nemo, except without the white stripes. So I gave him half of that name and called him Moe. The funny thing is that the owner of that aquarium store Moe came from – lady with a great sense of humour, started calling all their heart-shaped parrot fishes “Moe”. And when I came to the store, she would greet me with :”Hi there Moe’s mom!”

Moe now rules the tank – he “landscapes” the scenery to his liking and often has a sort of a “tug of war” with arrangements with David – he will move plants, rocks and any other items where he wants them – not where we would like them. But that’s what makes him special. Plus the fact that he always looks like he is smiling – it’s good to have a smiling face at home at all times!

Do you have a fish with a story? Or do you actually have a heart shaped parrot fish? Let me know – I would love to hear all about your special wet friend!

My cat with his unique personality

My cat with his unique personality

Biscuit is a cat with a real cool personality. Literally. He does what he wants, when he wants and how he wants it. My son Dan brought Biscuit home 16 years ago from New Brunswick. He had a summer job there and just before he was to return home, he met this tiny little kitten, only 3 weeks old at the time. The poor little thing was the only boy in a large litter of girl kittens – and because he was not likely to survive, the owner was going to dispose of him in a way that I do not want to mention here. Of course Dan – who always saved any animal he encountered- took the kitten and drove home with him. During the long drive from New Brunswick to Ontario, he really thought the poor little kitten wasn’t going to make it. But each time he thought it was over, it turned out that the little guy was just sleeping. When they got home, we fed Biscuit with an eye dropped and within literally days he was running around, eating everything he could get his paws on. That included a pork chop taken directly off Dan’s plate in a flash – all we saw was a streak of grey and white fur flying over the table and the pork chop was gone!

Biscuit is a beautiful cat and speaking of personalities, he definitely has a unique one! Doesn’t particularly like to be cuddled all that much – but when he does, he lets you know! Everything has to be done on his terms- his food dish needs to have food in it at all times, when it gets empty, he will follow me around, getting under my feet repeatedly, charging from all directions unexpectedly being quite vocal about his needs. And if i still ignore him – just to see what he will do next, he starts pushing his dish into middle of the kitchen as if saying :”Do you not get it? My dish needs refill!”

Here are some pictures of my little furry buddy – and I would love to hear your cat or kitten stories!
