Broccoli is a great source of nutrition for your baby. It is best steamed or microwaved – boiling will remove about half of the vitamin C content. To make this great staple taste better for your baby, mix it with a sweet tasting vegetable like sweet potatoes, rutabaga, butternut squash or pumpkin. You can also try variations such as sweet potato and peas or sweet potato and spinach.

Sweet Potato and Broccoli puree:

1 medium sweet potato (peeled and chopped)

3/4 cup of broccoli florets

1 tablespoon of unsalted butter

1 to 2 tablespoon of baby’s usual milk

Steam the sweet potato and broccoli until tender (sweet potato will take about 12 minutes, broccoli about 6 minutes) or Place the sweet potato in a saucepan, cover with water and boil for 8-10 minutes. Add steamed or microwaved softened broccoli. Cool slightly, put into a blender, add butter and milk and puree until smooth.

This puree can also be frozen if you want to make some ahead of time.

applespearsOne of the best first fruit puree to give to your baby is a combination of apples and pears. They contain pectin, which can help your baby’s digestive system – especially of your baby has a tendency to have a diarrhea after eating. Pectin is a soluble fiber that helps to stimulate bacteria and helps baby’s bowels to process solids efficiently.

Homemade Fruit Puree for your Baby:

1 medium apple and  1 medium pear, peeled, cored and chopped

2 tablespoons of water or unsweetened apple juice

Directions:

Put the chopped fruit into a saucepan, add water or apple juice (if the pear you are using is ripe, you will not need the water or juice). Cover and cook over medium heat for about 6 minutes. Blend the fruit to a puree and serve to your baby lukewarm.

260px-vegetable_puree_476Carrots make excellent food for your baby when you are starting to introduce solids into baby’s diet, since they are naturally sweet. You don’t need to wait any longer than 6 months to do this – your baby needs to learn how to chew and swallow food. And chewing and swallowing also helps greatly with the development of muscles that are essential for speech.

Homemade Carrot Puree for your Baby:

Use 4-6 medium carrots – peeled and chopped

Directions:

Put your carrots into a steamer over boiling water (don’t put the directly into the boiling water as you will loose nutrients if you do) Steam for 15 – 20 minutes or until your carrots are tender. Remove from steamer, cool just a bit and place into a blender. Add little of the water from the pot you used to put your steamer on and puree until very smooth. How much liquid you add will depend on on how thick or thin your baby likes the puree – add enough to make it easy for your baby to swallow. You can serve to your baby lukewarm and store any unused portion in your refrigerator.

Note: Carrots are actually more nutritious if you make the puree them with a little fat – use a small pat of unsalted butter that you add to your blender.

To make this alternative version of carrot puree, try:

Creamy Carrot  Puree:

1 tablespoon of baby rice cereal

3 tablespoons of baby’s usual milk

1/4 cup of carrot puree

Mix the baby rice cereal and milk together and stir into your homemade carrot puree

baby_eating440I have decided to add this section because I believe that making your own baby food is an excellent idea for number of reasons. Just check out one thing: take a look at the expiry date on the jar. What is inside has been designed to last for as many as two years! But that is not the worst of it – lots of commercially prepared foods are bland and tasteless – simply unappealing. Just how do you help your baby develop sense of taste if he or she starts with food that has very little taste to begin with? Children who show lack of interest in food are doing it because their taste buds have not been exposed to  real food – and can become picky eaters simply because of lack of exposure to interesting, delicious food.

Don’t get me wrong – there are times when you will want to give your baby commercially prepared food for the sake of convenience – but I urge you to consider the healthier and definitely more tasteful option as much as you can!

When is your baby ready to start eating solid foods?

Babies grow the fastest in their first year then at any other time in their life. You don’t have to be in a hurry to feed your baby solids. For the frst sic months, breast milk or formula will provide all the nutrients you baby will need. At around the six month mark, your baby will get to a stage where solid foods are a needed addition. There is no “right” age at which to start your baby on solid foods – each baby is different. It is not a good idea to start much sooner than the 6 months – baby’s digestive system needs to develop properly first.

Here are some signs that you baby is ready for solid foods:

  • Still hungry after a full feeding
  • Demanding to feed more frequently
  • Wakes up at night for a feeding previously slept through

What babies need in their diet:

  • More fat and concentrated sources of calories and nutrients
  • Full-fat variety of dairy products (such as milk and yogurt) – not the low-fat versions
  • Not too much fiber (tends to be too bulky and can flush out valuable minerals or cause diarrhea)
  • Variety of fruits and vegetables – preferably the ones that are higher in calories (i.e. fruits mixed with yogurt, vegetables with cheese sauce)
  • Iron rich meats – red meats and poultry
  • Citrus fruits – rich in Vitamin C that will also help to boost iron absorption

I will be adding detailed instructions for individual recipes here as I add them to this topic – please click on the link below to see the recipes you want:

Tips on Baby Nutrition

baby-diet1

I am sure that there are moms out there – especially the brand new ones – who constantly think and sometimes worry about the proper nutrition for their little ones. I have done a bit of research and put together some valuable tips, that I think will help. Please add your comments and any additional information you may have or have learned from experience. Your input is always welcomed!

Tips on Baby Nutrition:

Infants – 0-6 months:

  • This is the time period that babies get their nutrition form breast milk or formulas. Ensuring that mom gets all the nutrients becomes the important thing here. A breastfeeding mom should increase her calorie intake by 300 – 500 calori3es over her normal diet. This should include adding calcium, which is very important since lactation draws calcium out of your bones.

Infants – 6-12 months:

  • If you baby is able to sit up and  hold objects, try to give him some solid food and see if he will attempt to feed himself. Some babies are ready to do this at 6 months, other need to wait til they are 8 months old – that is completely natural. Organic food are a great choice for your baby – babies are vulnerable to pesticides, because their brain, immune system and detoxification system is still developing. Nutritious food include brown rice, carrots, sweet potatoes and oatmeal, since they are nutrient dense and rich in fibre. great way to introduce your baby to what you eat (ultimately, that is what you will be feeding him or her anyway) is to start pureeing the foods you eat and giving it to your baby.

Infants 12+ months:

  • Depending on their age, size and activity level, toddlers will need about 1000 – 1400 calories a day. It is important to remember, that their appetite will decrease at this age, because their physical growth is slowing down. The bet is to teach them to eat 3 smaller meals a day plus two to three healthy snacks. And it is equally important to remember that about one th8ird of their dietary intake should be in a form of fat. That is necessary for proper brain development. Consider your toddler’s fat intake from milk, cheese, yogurt, meat, fish, chicken or eggs.

Supplements for children:

A daily multivitamins and supplements can make the most of your child’s health. here are a few other essentials that may not be included with multivitamins:

Omega-3 Fatty Acids – important for growth and development and help against future cardiovascular disease and behaviour problems

Calcium - help in developments of healthy bones and teeth and plays important role in muscle contraction as well as transmission of messages through the nerves and release of hormones.

Vitamin D - Helps to maintain normal blood levels of calcium and phosphorus to form and maintain strong bones

One of the best ways to ensure that your child is getting proper nutrition and have your questions answered is to contact you health provider – that will be the one thing that will put any mom’s mind at ease!

Top Ten Tips to Well-behaved Child

April 6, 2009 in Parenting by Hanna Trafford

Rating: 0.0/10 (0 votes cast)

temper-tantrumThe dream of every parent….children that are always well-behaved! Is there such a thing? Honestly – I don’t think so. Simply because there is such a thing as a perception of good behaviour – and that will vary from person to person, depending on the standards everyone sets for themselves. But – then there are children who intentionally misbehave – we have all seen them. And definitely – behaviour has levels of irritation – I think we can all vouch for that. I am not sure if I did the greatest job with my kids – but I think I did a decent one. It would be kind of fun to have them actually comment here – and I will for sure request that from them! And it would be equally great to hear from parents out there – please share your experiences!

Here are some points that may be helpful to reaching that point of a well-behaved child:

  1. Children who feel they can do anything they feel like doing and get anything they want are usually the ones who whine, cry and throw temper tantrums when their demands are not responded to positively. You need to make your child understand why a certain behaviour is expected from them. For example: just telling them to get going and go to bed is not the same as telling them they need to go to bed at 8 o’clock because their bodies need a lot of sleep to stay strong and healthy.
  2. Offering praise goes a long way. Whether its helping you set the dinner table or make their own bed, your acknowledgement is very important. If you don’t, the only thing the child will remember is that what he or she did didn’t matter. Then try to make them make their bed – they already know that it really doesn’t matter!
  3. If you are in the habit leaving dishes on the table after you are finished eating, don’t expect your child to do anything different. Simple translation: you have to set rules for yourself and follow them – it something called “setting an example.”
  4. If your child breaks your rule and feels bad about it, the immediate reaction would be to tell him not to worry about it and just do it or not do it the next time. Don’t go there – letting your child know that it bothers you will cultivate their conscience – they will remember it better! But don’t let them suffer for too long – that would bring on a bit of resentment.
  5. Letting your child make decisions is a good thing. It can be as simple as asking them which pajamas they want to wear to bed, to getting them to make a decision in a disagreement with a sibling by asking :”How can you handle this differently” instead of just bursting out “Don’t do that!” or  “Stop that!”
  6. Encourage them to try again – good example is teaching a pre-schooler to tie his or her shoes. The temptation is to do it for them – especially if you are in a hurry. But again – achieving and accomplishing even the smallest tasks does a great deal for their self-confidence.
  7. It is a good thing to teach your child to think things out. If your child asks you how to do something, ask them what they think first – how would they do it. That also greatly helps to develop their confidence.
  8. Don’t always drop everything to get your child what he or she asks for – make them wait a little. Trust me – if you jump every time they say – their expectations will be that is the standard  – and that is how temper tantrums are developed.
  9. Ask your children – don’t just tell. For example – if they don’t want to play with a another child, ask them how they would feel if someone else wouldn’t want to play with them. Make them think it out!
  10. Engaging your child in activities that require patience is a very good exercise on an ongoing basis. Good examples are puzzles, block building or even planting a seed. Immediate results are not there – they have to wait various lengths of time for it and it goes a long way in teaching patience.

You have probably guessed – or already know – that well-behaved children are a product of ongoing parental efforts. Personally I believe that there is no simple recipe and I like what Dr.Phil advised long, long time ago:

Ask yourself: Ïs it working for me?

If the answer is “No”- then simply – “Don’t do it!

Ten tips to make your baby smile

baby_laughingWhat is better than listening to your baby laugh? There isn’t a person in the world that wouldn’t have a smile on their face when hearing that natural, infectious sound. Here are some ways to get your baby to smile and laugh – and for sure, happy baby makes for happy mommy!

  1. Stretching can feel reeeaaaal good! Lay your baby on its back on a blanket and gently extend left leg and right arm away from the body. Follow by slowly hugging right knee up to the chest, gently moving it toward the left leg. Repeat the moves with the opposite side, making sure the movements are slow and gentle and remember to keep smiling while doing these stretches!
  2. Putting on a happy face – remember that your baby loves looking at you! Flash you goofiest smile, open eyes wide , play a little peekaboo! Lean close and kiss baby’s nose. Whatever puts your smiling face in her field of vision will result in a big smile
  3. Same is good – you don;t have to keep inventing new trick to make your baby smile and laugh! Babies are very content and happy when they know what’s coming up. Like a big cuddle before bedtime, or signing "you are my sunshine" over and over…. happiness is a very simple thing when you are a tine creature!
  4. Hand it over! By the time you baby is 3-4 months old, it will love to grab onto things. One of the easiest ways to get your baby smiling or giggling is to hold a colourful toy in front of him ot her and as the little hand reaches for it, don’t move it away – hand it over!
  5. Let’s get going! - Tiny babies, even those in a pre-walking stage love to pretend they are actually standing and walking. Hold your baby under his arms and start bouncing him between a mini-obstacle course of things like over-turned laundry baskets, boxes, pillows or any other smaller items in your household. When the baby lands, let him put some weight on his legs – make him believe he is big and strong and watch that smile!
  6. Happy feet – babies love foot massage!  Even if their feet are not sore and tired like yours may be, your gentle touch will do wonders to their feet. For a quick and easy massage, apply gentle pressure to each of your baby’s tiny toes, then rub the palm of your hand on his heels. Press thumbs up and across the little feet and finish with a kiss on each big toe!
  7. Happy tummies – without a doubt, calm tummies make for contented babies. If you feel that your baby’s tummy is a little tense or see your baby drawing his knees up to his stomach – especially after a meal. Lay your baby gently on his stomach and pat his back, or lay him on his stomach and do a bicycle paddle with his legs. This will relieve pressures that are bothering his still developing digestive system
  8. Pacify me! Sucking is your baby’s most instinctive reflex. But even after feeding, the urge to suck can make him a bit unhappy. Try to hand over the pacifier and even his fingers (yes – it is OK and not likely to develop a bad habit)
  9. Dance with me! Put on your favourite songs and holding your baby in your arms, have a little dance! Moving to the rhythm of- for example calypso music -or signing along is sure to put a smile on that little face
  10. Tell me a secret! This one works well on a baby that is crying – or screaming. Get very close to his ear and start whispering a story – he will most likely stop crying since you can’t hear of you are screaming and you will likely see that unhappy face replaced with content one or even a smile!

I am sure there are many other way to make your baby happy – please share yours!
