Homemade Sweet Potato and Broccoli puree for your Baby
April 23, 2009 in Parenting, Recipes by Hanna Trafford

Broccoli is a great source of nutrition for your baby. It is best steamed or microwaved – boiling will remove about half of the vitamin C content. To make this great staple taste better for your baby, mix it with a sweet tasting vegetable like sweet potatoes, rutabaga, butternut squash or pumpkin. You can also try variations such as sweet potato and peas or sweet potato and spinach.
Sweet Potato and Broccoli puree:
1 medium sweet potato (peeled and chopped)
3/4 cup of broccoli florets
1 tablespoon of unsalted butter
1 to 2 tablespoon of baby’s usual milk
Steam the sweet potato and broccoli until tender (sweet potato will take about 12 minutes, broccoli about 6 minutes) or Place the sweet potato in a saucepan, cover with water and boil for 8-10 minutes. Add steamed or microwaved softened broccoli. Cool slightly, put into a blender, add butter and milk and puree until smooth.
This puree can also be frozen if you want to make some ahead of time.

One of the best first fruit puree to give to your baby is a combination of apples and pears. They contain pectin, which can help your baby’s digestive system – especially of your baby has a tendency to have a diarrhea after eating. Pectin is a soluble fiber that helps to stimulate bacteria and helps baby’s bowels to process solids efficiently.
Carrots make excellent food for your baby when you are starting to introduce solids into baby’s diet, since they are naturally sweet. You don’t need to wait any longer than 6 months to do this – your baby needs to learn how to chew and swallow food. And chewing and swallowing also helps greatly with the development of muscles that are essential for speech.
I have decided to add this section because I believe that making your own baby food is an excellent idea for number of reasons. Just check out one thing: take a look at the expiry date on the jar. What is inside has been designed to last for as many as two years! But that is not the worst of it – lots of commercially prepared foods are bland and tasteless – simply unappealing. Just how do you help your baby develop sense of taste if he or she starts with food that has very little taste to begin with? Children who show lack of interest in food are doing it because their taste buds have not been exposed to real food – and can become picky eaters simply because of lack of exposure to interesting, delicious food.
It is not an easy task to get together everything new baby might need. There is oh so much cute stuff available on the market – when I go and look at baby stores I could just buy one of everything! Here I have put together the Top Ten Basics I think would be a good start in getting everythign ready for that new person – hope it will make your decisions and organization easier!

The dream of every parent….children that are always well-behaved! Is there such a thing? Honestly – I don’t think so. Simply because there is such a thing as a perception of good behaviour – and that will vary from person to person, depending on the standards everyone sets for themselves. But – then there are children who intentionally misbehave – we have all seen them. And definitely – behaviour has levels of irritation – I think we can all vouch for that. I am not sure if I did the greatest job with my kids – but I think I did a decent one. It would be kind of fun to have them actually comment here – and I will for sure request that from them! And it would be equally great to hear from parents out there – please share your experiences!
What is better than listening to your baby laugh? There isn’t a person in the world that wouldn’t have a smile on their face when hearing that natural, infectious sound. Here are some ways to get your baby to smile and laugh – and for sure, happy baby makes for happy mommy!
