Easter is just about upon us once again and as always, I love to add easy to make crafts.

All of these are great to get your children involved in a very creative process and you don’t need too many special materials to create some really beautiful and inexpensive Easter decorations.  As with any other crafts, let you imagination run wild and get creative, using the described crafts as a guideline to creating other versions.

I really hope you have fun with these, if you’ve got any different craft ideas or ways to make these crafts better, please leave a note in the comments below. As always please share these with your friends and family through Facebook or by email.

Easter Egg Heads:

Bring out a young crafter’s creativity with these Easter egg heads. Kids think the wiggle eyes are especially funny! And when you visit your local craft store to get the wigglies, keep your eyes opened for things you can use for hair, hats, etc – get creative and you will love the results!

Materials:

  • Boiled eggs
  • 3-D paint or glitter glue, in a variety of colors
  • White craft glue
  • Wiggle eyes, in any size
  • Cooling rack or film canister lids
  • Marker
  • Mini bowl (optional)
  • Tweezers (optional)
  • Empty egg cartons

Directions:

You will need to decorate only one side of the egg at a time. Let the eggs dry either on egg cartons turned upside down, on a cooling rack or film canister lid. Decorate other side when first side is dry.

  1. Place egg into an empty egg carton for stability.
  2. Use glitter glue or 3-D paint to “draw” on hair. This will need to dry for several hours.
  3. If you wish to add a bow, place a small construction paper or ribbon bow into the 3-D paint or glitter glue hair before it dries all the way.
  4. Decide where you want to place the wiggle eyes and glue them in place.
  5. Add a nose by gluing on a miniature pom pom
  6. Draw on a mouth with a marker.

Place on a decorative plate, an Easter basket, or make an arrangement for your table

 Bunny Wreath

Materials:

  • Ring of cardboard (empty cereal boxes work wonderfully)
  • construction paper (pink and yellow, green and pink or combination of your choice)
  • scissors
  • glue

Instructions:

  • Trace a small plate and a large plate onto a piece of old cardboard.
  • Empty cereal boxes or frozen dinner boxes work well
  • It doesn’t matter if you go over the folds of the cardboard
  • Cut a small strip of cardboard and glue it onto the back of the ring over any folds in the cardboard. This will reinforce the ring.
  • Cut strips of construction paper (about 1 1/2 inches by 4 inches) and glue the strips into rolls (like making a paper chain)
  • Glue the rolls of construction paper onto the wreath.  We made a pink and yellow pattern, but you can do it however you wish.
  • Print out the template.
  • Color the template pieces and cut out.
  • Glue the head, easter egg and two paws on top of the wreath.
  • Glue the body, tail and two paws on the back of the wreath (so it looks like the bunny is peeking over the top.

This is another favourite treat – for EAster or for anytime. If you have not makde Hot Cross Buns before, trying the recipe now will give you the chance to do it before the Easter holidays. I have made these ahead of time, froze them and then put them into the oven for a few minutes just before serving time. They come out beautifully!

Ingredients:

  • 3/4 cup of milk
  • 1 package (1/4 oz.) of active dry yeast
  •  1/2 teaspoon of granulated white sugar
  •  3- 1/2 – 4 cups of all purpose flour
  •  1/4 cup of light brown sugar
  •  1 teaspoon of cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon of cloves
  • 1/4 teaspoon of allspice
  • 1/4 teaspoon of nutmeg
  • 1/2 teaspoon of salt
  • 1/4 cup (4 tablespoons) of unsalted butter, room temperature
  • 2 large eggs
  •  1/2 cup of candied fruit and peel mix
  • 1/4 cup of raisins or currants

Egg wash:

  • 1 large egg
  • 1 tablespoon of milk or cream

Glaze:

  • 1/2 cup of confectioners (powdered or icing) sugar, sifted
  • 1 tablespoon milk or cream

Directions:

  1. In a small saucepan or in the microwave heat the milk until lukewarm .
  2. Add the yeast and 1/2 teaspoon sugar and stir to combine.
  3. Set aside for about 10 minutes or until the yeast is activated and is foamy.
  4. Meanwhile in the bowl of your electric mixer, combine the flour, brown sugar, spices, and salt.
  5. Once the yeast is foamy, add to the flour mixture and beat to combine.
  6. Add the eggs, one at a time, mixing well after each addition.
  7. With the mixer on low, gradually add the butter, mixing until the butter is incorporated and the dough comes together. With the dough attachment, knead the dough until it is smooth and elastic (about 5 minutes).
  8. Transfer the dough to a lightly floured surface and, by hand, gradually knead in the candied and dried fruit.
  9. Place the dough in a lightly greased bowl, turning the dough once, so the top is lightly greased.
  10. Cover with plastic wrap or a clean dish towel and place in a warm spot to rise until it has doubled in size (about 1 1/2 hours).
  11. When the dough has doubled in size, punch it down, and divide into 12 equal pieces.
  12. Form each piece into a small round ball and place on a parchment lined baking sheet (Place three buns to a row, four rows altogether. They should be spaced so they have enough room to double in size.)
  13. Make an egg wash of one beaten egg with 1 tablespoon milk, and brush the tops of the buns with the wash.
  14. Cover with plastic wrap or a clean dish towel and place in a warm spot until almost doubled in size (about 30 – 60 minutes).
  15. Preheat oven to 400 degrees F .
  16. Brush the tops of the buns with the egg wash again and, with a sharp, lightly greased knife ,make a cross in the tops of each bun.
  17. Place the baking sheet in the preheated oven and bake for about 15 minutes, or until the buns are nicely browned and a toothpick inserted in the centre comes out clean.
  18.

Hope this recipe will turn out well for you, please send in your comments, suggestions and experiences – your input is always welcomed and very much appreciated

All About Easter

Easter is the most important annual religious feast in the Christian year. According to Christian scripture, Jesus was resurrected from the dead on the third day of his crucifixion.Christians celebrate this on Easter Sunday – that is two days after Good Friday and three days after Maundy Thursday.

Easter also marks the end of Lent, a season of fasting, prayer and penance. It is a moveable feast, that means that it is not fixed in relation to the civil calendar.

New elements came to life in the modern life, including the Easter Bunny and Easter Egg Hunts.

The Name of Easter

The origins of the word “Easter” is not certain – it most likely came from Estre, an Anglo-Saxon goddess of spring. The German word Ostern has the same derivation.

The Date of Easter

Determining the date of Easter is complex and it has been a matter of controversy. The Catholic and Protestant churches of the Western world celebrate Easter on the first Sunday following the first new moon after the spring equinox. But it does become more complicated – the spring equinox is fixed for March 21 and the full moon is actually paschal moon – based on 84-year old :paschal cycle: established in the sixth century. It rarely corresponds to the astronomical full moon. So because of this complicated calculation, Easter usually falls anywhere between March 22 and April 25th.

Easter is now celebrated on the first Sunday after the full moon which happens on or after March 21 – the spring Equinox.

Easter Facts

If you wondered how eggs are connected to Easter – it dates back to medieval times, when a festival of egg throwing was held in church. During the festival, the priest would throw a hard-boiled egg to one of the choirboys. It was then tossed from one choirboy to another and whoever held the egg when the clock struck 12 was the winner and got to keep the egg.

Tradition dictated the churchgoers wear some bright new piece of clothing – hence the Easter bonnet came about – especially for those who could not afford a whole new outfit.

In modern times, the tradition of eggs has been expanded to including the famous Easter bunny who hides eggs that are fun for children to go hunting for and special meals that give an opportunity for families to get together and celebrate this holiday.

easter_eggsColouring Easter eggs can be a great activity for the whole family – and the kids love it! Doing it doesn’t have to be difficult or complicated – I remember my grandma making Easter eggs the Eastern European way, with colours, wax and a needle. But I have to admit that I have never mastered – or even tried that particular art.

Here are a few recipes for making pretty Easter eggs the easy way:

Marbled Easter Eggs:

marbled-eggs

What you will need:

  • Hard boiled eggs
  • Store bought dye or food colouring/vinegar dye
  • 1 tablespoon of vegetable oil for each egg

How to make them:

  • Mix dye according to package directions
  • Add 1 Tbsp vegetable oil to each color you want to marbleize
  • Dye eggs as directed on dye package
  • When you remove the eggs, the oil will have caused a very nifty marbelized effect

Crayon Coloured Easter Eggs

crayon_eggs03_350_rdax_65

What you will need:

  • Crayons
  • Boiled eggs
  • Neon food coloring and white vinegar (optional)

How to make them:

  1. Be sure that boiled eggs are cool and dry.
  2. Place a double folded kitchen towel and place it on the table underneath child’s hands so if the egg slips out it will have a soft cushion to land on.
  3. Use crayons to draw designs on the egg.
  4. Have kids hold the egg gently so they do not crack the shell.
  5. This step is optional but adds a fun effect. If you like, mix 1 Tbsp of white vinegar into a coffee mug of water (filled ¾ full) then add several drops of food coloring.
  6. Dip the crayon coloured egg into the dye and let sit for about a minute.
  7. Remove and let dry. The dye makes the crayon look brighter, especially if you use neon food coloring!

Tips:

  • To boil perfect eggs, place into a shallow pan, cover with water and boil gently for three minutes. Turn off heat and cover pan with a tight fitting lid and let sit for 15 minutes. Place pan in sink, carefully drain out hot water and let cold water run over them for several minutes. Turn off water and add several ice cubes and let sit for about 5 minutes more.
  • Try different types of food coloring, we used neon colors!

The longer you leave the egg in the dye, the deeper the color will be.

Sponge Painted Easter Eggs

easter-sponge-painted-eggs_rdax_65

What you will need:

  • Hard boiled eggs
  • Acrylic craft paints in the colors of your choice
  • Household sponge
  • Paper towel
  • Small bowl of water
  • Egg holder or empty egg carton

How to make them:

  1. Soak a household sponge in water, then ring it out completely. Cut the sponge into several different pieces, enough so that you have one for each color.
  2. Using a paper plate as a palette, squeeze out small amounts of several different colors of paint.
  3. Place an empty egg carton upside down so that you can rest your eggs on it to dry once painted.
  4. Hold an egg in your fingers, and with your other hand, dab a sponge into desired paint color.
  5. Dab the sponge onto a piece of paper towel. The object is to remove the excess paint, but not completely dry it out.
  6. Now dab the sponge directly onto your egg, using any type of random pattern you like. Paint as much of the egg as you can and place it down to dry.
  7. Repeat steps four to six for each egg, using different colors.
  8. For a coloured background with white sponge marks, simply paint the egg a solid color with a paint brush or with one of your sponges. When dry, sponge on a pattern with white paint.
  9. When one side has dried, complete the other side and allow that to dry as well.
  10. Place eggs into an egg holder, or fill a bowl with Easter grass and arrange the eggs atop the grass.

Tips:

  • To make pastel paints from primary colors, simply add enough white paint until you have reached the shade you want.
  • Use a pair of scissors to round the edge of the sponges. Square edge can make your design look choppy, whereas a rounded edge looks softer.
  • Instead of painting the eggs a solid color, you can always dye them with traditional methods, then sponge paint them with white. This is an easy alternative if you don’t have several different paint colors on hand.
  • Get creative! Make different shapes by cutting hearts or letters from the sponges. Dollar stores will sometimes have shaped sponges in the kid’s bath section.

Hope you have lots of fun making these colourful Easter Eggs – please send in your comments, suggestions and experiences – your input is always very much welcomed and appreciated!
