bt0508_deep-dish-pizza_lgThis recipe uses frozen bread dough – one you can get at your local supermarket. If you have a bread maker, it is easy (and of course less expensive) to make your bread dough yourself. Using that instead of the regular pizza dough will add to the flavour and it does make a great crust!

Homemade Chicago Style Deep Dish Pizza:

1 loaf (1 lb.) frozen bread dough, thawed

1 lb. bulk Italian sausage

2 cups of shredded part-skim Mozzarella cheese

1/2 lb. of sliced fresh mushrooms

1 small onion, chopped

2 teaspoons of olive oil

1 can of diced tomatoes (28 oz)

3/4 teaspoon of dried oregano

1/2 teaspoon of salt

1/2 teaspoon of fennel seed, crushed

1/4 teaspoon of garlic powder

1/2 cup of grated Parmesan cheese

Roll our the dough and press into the bottom and sides of greased 13 x 9 baking dish (if you have a large deep dish pizza pan, use that, or you can also use large round cake pan)

In a large skillet, cook sausage over medium heat until it is no longer link – drain excess fat. Sprinkle over dough and top with mozzarella cheese.

In a skillet, saute mushrooms and onion until the onion is tender. Stir in tomatoes, oregano, salt, fennel seed and garlic powder. Spoon over mozzarella cheese. Sprinkle with Parmesan cheese.

Bake at 350F for 25 – 35 minutes until the crust is golden.
